Ilyas, abide in God’s protection and the shelter of sacred pledges;
Ilyas, be in God's keeping and under pledges of protection,
O possessor of a precious life, inviolate from separation’s calamities.
with a soul inviolate against separation's calamities.

وَدَعدَعاًand 'stay fallen!' وَلَعاًand 'rise again!' فيin النَعلِthe shoe وَالقَدَمِand the foot
May health be yours, its bloom never disturbed—
May you have health whose bloom remains untroubled,
no cry of “Stumble!” or “Rise!” over sandal or foot.
and let 'stay fallen!' and 'rise again!' concern only shoe and foot.
اللَهُGod عافاكَhealed you مِنهاof it عِلَّةًan illness عَرَضاًa passing occurrence
لَمdid not تُنحِdirect أَظفارَهاits claws مِنfrom سَقَمِsickness
God has healed you of it—an illness that befell you,
God healed you of it—a passing illness
whose claws never struck with the force of true sickness.
whose claws had inflicted no sickness.

The frontier’s dust-clouds cleared from the moment
The frontier's dust clouds cleared when
your Lord’s favors dispelled the sickness you felt within.
your Lord's blessings lifted the sickness you had felt.

And if there was a lingering ache whose violence you endured,
So if there was sickness whose fury you witnessed,
recurring fever is the fierce lion of the thicket’s sworn companion.
fever is a sworn ally of the wrathful forest lion.

Indeed, when the winds rage at full force, they snap
Indeed, when the winds blow fiercely, they shatter
the boughs of Najd, paying no heed to the broom shrub.
Najd's boughs, yet pay no heed to broom shrubs.

The Daughters of the Bier—and the Bier itself—suffer no eclipse;
The Daughters of Naʿsh and Naʿsh itself know no eclipse,
yet the sun and full moon are forever entered on its register.
while the sun and full moon are ever in peril from it.

Calamities are the enemy of the noblest, and therefore
And calamities are the noblest men's enemy, so they
they choose none but a man who can sate ravenous hunger.
choose only a man who satisfies their craving for flesh.
فَليَهنَكَso may it gladden you الأَجرُthe reward وَالنُعمىand the blessing الَّتيwhich عَظُمَتgrew great

May the reward and the blessing that grew so great gladden you,
May the reward gladden you, and the blessing that grew so great
until it polished the rust from the keen al-Ṣamṣāma blade.
that it polished the rust from the keen, cleaving sword.
قَدmay يُنعِمُbestow blessings اللَهُGod بِالبَلوىthrough affliction وَإِنeven if عَظُمَتit is great

God may bestow grace through affliction, however severe,
God may bestow blessings through affliction, however great,
and God may test some people with blessings.
and God tests some people with blessings.
