Your sleep, O my eye, is forbidden to you.

So let loose tears that stream in torrents.

For in tears lies the quenching of longing’s fire,

Whose blaze rages amid the folds of the ribs.

And O my burning liver, which has split apart

From love’s anguish, melt—no blame rests on you.

I have fulfilled a duty to love that was binding

Upon me; and I too have a claim upon it.

And O face of one—faces of the mighty have bowed

Before him; he has prevailed in might and is beyond reach—

Shelter one seeking refuge with you in love, stretching

Both his hands toward you, while all eyes sleep.
