    مِن دونِهِ شَرَقٌ مِن خَلفِهِ جَرَضُ

    The humiliation of begging is a bone lodged across the throat;

before it lies choking, and behind it, suffocation.

Your palm's water, whether freely offered or withheld,

is no recompense for my face's water—my honor—once I have spent it.

I see your affairs: their trodden paths are scorching ground

when traversed, and what is sealed in them lies broken open.

I brighten when brought even a little closer,

just as I shrink when kept even a little farther away.

Run your discernment from my crown to my foot,

and make it walk where there is neither stumbling nor slipping.

It will tell you I am no craven who holds back

from ordeals, nor a wasted sluggard who never stirs.

Of whom shall I complain, with whom claim affiliation, and whose bounty

shall I seek? All my affairs with you are unraveling.

Affection has vanished; its fruits are doubts,

and ambition is substance, its generosity mere accident.

I suspect there are people around you, and I reckon they

have spared no effort against me in all their running and galloping.

They shoot at me with eyes filled with sparks,

speaking for hearts filled with sickness.

Were it not for the last drops of my honor and my waiting for tomorrow—

and swallowing anger is a binding duty upon me forever—

I would not have freed the necks of verse from my thoughts,

nor their necks, save with them bleeding like menstruants.

I now find my glories pelted with his obscure verse

by one whose whole being is a target for all my arrows.
