Gray hair wove for him an enveloping cloak,
pure white, veiling his temples and covering half his head.

Time's gaze upon him has cut short
his brother's gaze, in sorrow and anguish.

No sooner had his hair grown black than it turned white, like the vine
not yet ripe when someone came to pluck it.

When life's vicissitudes streaked their blackness
with their whiteness, they toyed with him, and he too became streaked.

that the moon might be eclipsed before reaching fullness.

O gazelle of the valley bend at Muhajjar,
grazing on ripe arak berries in summer, and acacia pods,

you seek tender new growth in its lower reaches
and rest at noon above, in a hollow covert.

You brought my heart a burning ache, a sorrow
that followed hopes of you which proved mere glitter.

with poems whose thirsty throng your sea did not quench;
and had they sought water from solid rock, they would have split the rock.

By God, what a means of approach: at first
so strong, yet in the end, how weak!

I fear, as I consider what awaits you, that
you will be called the procrastinator, and I the importunate one.

Once even my smallest ambition thought little of
spring's abundance; now I am content with summer rain.

Your winds blew for me as a gentle southern breeze,
until, when I put forth leaves, they turned to an icy gale.

If you bestow no bounty, and do not regard me
as worthy of it, I think you ought to be fair.

What excuse has one whose bounty obeys him,
yet whose nature is to regard it as a strain?

You have gone to excess in denying me; your customary way
has reined you back from giving to excess.

May God guard you from changing, and from the weakening
of what hope has invested in you, past and future.

Do not turn your bounty from one who has left no room
for praise of you to turn toward anyone else.

Cultivate your youthful generosity; you will find poems
whose wild verses have found a discerning man in you.

Do not choose that course, and so enrage wild verses
that stirred you—unless you wish them to strike you like a whetted blade.
أَفنِextinguish التَظَنُّنَdoubt بِالتَيَقُّنِwith certainty إِنَّهُindeed it

End doubt with certainty: a gift
is not lost while it leaves redoubled praise.

Many a noble, generous man's bounty has been seized
by delay, so the face of his bounty became its back.

I have spared no effort with you—in harshness and bluster,
in brilliance, gentleness, and wit.

Yet I see you spurn my claim to respect; perhaps I
have been a burden, though unrebuked; let me lighten it.
