أَرىI see أَلِفاتٍalif letters قَدalready كُتِبنَhave been written عَلىupon راسيmy head
بِأَقلامِwith pens of شَيبٍgray hair فيon مَهارِقِparchment sheets of أَنقاسِink
I see alifs already written upon my head,
With pens of gray hair upon parchments of ink.
فَإِنand if تَسأَلينيyou ask me مَنwho يَخُطُّtraces حُروفَهُits letters
فَأَيديthen the hands of اللَياليthe nights تَستَمِدُّdraw ink بِأَنفاسيfrom my breaths
And if you ask me who traces its letters,
Then the hands of the nights draw ink from my breaths.
جَرَتran فيin قُلوبِthe hearts of الغانِياتِbeautiful women لِشَيبَتيbecause of my gray hair
قُشَعريرَةٌa shudder مِنfrom بَعدِafter لينٍtenderness وَإِيناسِand warm familiarity
At my gray hair, through the hearts of beautiful women ran
A shudder, after tenderness and warm familiarity.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to أَجريflow فيwithin حَشاهُنَّtheir bosoms مَرَّةًonce
مَجارِيَthe courses of جاريrunning الماءِwater فيthrough قُضُبِshoots of الآسِmyrtle
And once I used to flow within their bosoms,
As running water flows through myrtle shoots.
فَإِنso if أُمسِI become مِنof وَصلِunion with الكَواعِبِfull-breasted maidens آيِساًdespairing
فَآخِرُfor the end of آمالِthe hopes of العِبادِmortals إِلىto الياسِdespair
So if I come to despair of union with full-breasted maidens,
For the end of mortals' hopes is despair.
