ماnot اليَومُtoday أَوَّلُthe first تَوديعٍfarewell وَلاnor الثانيthe second
البَينُparting أَكثَرُgreater مِنthan شَوقيmy longing وَأَحزانيand my sorrows
Today's farewell is neither the first nor the second;
parting surpasses my longing and my sorrows.
دَعِlet be الفِراقَparting فَإِنَّfor indeed الدَهرَTime ساعَدَهُhas aided it
فَصارَso it became أَملَكَmore in command مِنthan روحيmy soul بِجُثمانيover my body
Let parting be, for Time has aided it,
so it now rules my body more than my soul does.
خَليفَةُthe successor of الخِضرِal-Khidr مَنwhoever يَربَعsettles عَلىin وَطَنٍa homeland
فيin بَلدَةٍa town فَظُهورُfor the backs of العيسِthe pale camels أَوطانيmy homelands
Al-Khidr's successor is he who settles in a homeland,
in a town; for the backs of pale camels are my homelands.
بِالشامِin al-Sham أَهليmy family وَبَغدادُand Baghdad الهَوىlove
وَأَناand I بِالرَقَّتَينِin al-Raqqatayn وَبِالفُسطاطِand in al-Fustat إِخوانيmy brothers
My family is in al-Sham, and Baghdad is my heart's desire;
while I am in al-Raqqatayn, and my brothers are in al-Fustat.
وَماand not أَظُنُّI think النَوىseparation تَرضىis content بِماwith what صَنَعَتit has done
حَتّىuntil تُطَوِّحَit flings away بيme أَقصىthe farthest reaches of خُراسانِKhurasan
And I do not think separation will be content with what it has done
until it flings me to the farthest reaches of Khurasan.
خَلَّفتُI left behind بِالأُفُقِon the horizon الغَربِيِّwestern ليfor me سَكَناًa beloved
قَدindeed كانَwas عَيشيmy life بِهِwith him حُلواًsweet بِحُلوانِin Hulwan
I left a beloved of mine on the western horizon,
with whom my life had been sweet in Hulwan:
غُصنٌa bough مِنَof البانِthe ban tree مُهتَزٌّswaying عَلىupon قَمَرٍa moon

a bough of the ban tree, swaying upon a moon,
he sways as a bough sways among the ban trees.
أَفنَيتُI exhausted مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him فَيضَthe flood of الدُموعِtears كَماjust as
أَفنَيتُI exhausted فيin هَجرِهِseparation from him صَبريmy patience وَسُلوانيand my solace
After his departure I exhausted the flood of tears, just as
I exhausted my patience and my solace in separation from him.
وَلَيسَand does not يَعرِفُknow كُنهَthe true nature of الوَصلِunion صاحِبُهُone who enjoys it
حَتّىuntil يُغادىhe is met one morning بِنَأيٍwith distance أَوor بِهِجرانِwith abandonment
Nor does one who enjoys union know its true nature
until he is met one morning by distance or abandonment.

O harm of calamities, burrow into a tunnel,
for Ibn Hassan's benevolence has cast its shadow over you.

كَأَنَّماas though الدَهرُTime فيin كَفّيmy palm بِهاby them عانِa captive
I held fast to his affection, which tied knots for me,
as though Time were a captive in my palm, bound by them.
إِذاwhen نَوىresolves الدَهرُTime أَنto يوديdo away بِتالِدِهِwith his inherited wealth
لَمdid not يَستَعِنseek help غَيرَother than كَفَّيهِhis two hands بِأَعوانِfrom helpers
When Time resolves to do away with his inherited wealth,
it seeks no helpers but his two hands.

If our unanimity about his surpassing nobility
were in matters of faith, no two in the community would disagree.
