كُنتُI would have been لَولاهُbut for him أَسوَأَthe worst الناسِof all people حالاin condition
A visitor visited me and stirred a vision.
Without him, I would have been the worst off of all people.
فَتَمَتَّعتُso I delighted مِنin غَزالٍa gazelle وَحاشىyet far be it
ذَلِكَthat الشَخصَperson أَنto يَكونَbe غَزالاa gazelle
So I delighted in a gazelle—yet far be it
that such a person should be a gazelle.

How can I hope to meet someone dwelling in Baghdad
while I am in Egypt? Indeed, I have hoped in vain.

Wishes pictured him to my eye and my mind,
and to my heart, until I accepted the impossible.
ماnot أَرانيI see myself أَراكَI see you نَصبَbefore خَيالٍa phantom

I do not think I shall see you standing before a phantom
that visits by night, unless my body becomes a phantom.
