    I spent the night at peace with love’s anguish, at war with slumber,

    Prey to deep sighs and breaths.

    All night, unceasingly, I held down with my palm

    A liver whose pain cut like razors.

    تُ نادَيتُ يا أَبا العَبّاسِ

    Whenever my cares relented, I sighed;

    I called out: O Abu al-Abbas!

    Woe to me because of you! May you never suffer a tenth

    Of what loving you has brought upon my head.
