فَظَلِلتُ اَرمُقُهُ بِعَينِ الباهِتِ
A moon smiled, revealing pearls newly sprung.
A moon smiled, revealing sprouting pearls,
So I remained gazing at him, with the eyes of one dumbfounded.
So I kept gazing at him with an astonished eye.
مازالَcontinued to يَقصُرُfall short كُلُّall حُسنٍbeauty دونَهُbeneath him
مازالَ يَقصُرُ كُلُّ حُسنٍ دونَهُ

حَتّى تَفاوَتَ عَن صِفاتِ الناعِتِ
Every beauty still falls short of him,
All beauty kept falling short of him,
until he passed beyond the epithets of the describer.
Until he far outstripped the describer's descriptions.

Beauty prostrated itself before his face when it beheld
Beauty prostrated itself before his face when it saw
the bewilderment of minds before his surpassing loveliness.
The bewilderment of minds at his surpassing beauty.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَرجوsurely hope أَنthat أَنالَI may attain وِصالَهُunion with him
إِنّي لَأَرجو أَن أَنالَ وِصالَهُ
بِالعَطفِthrough kindness مِنهُfrom him وَرَغمَand despite أَنفِthe nose of الشامِتِthe gloater
بِالعَطفِ مِنهُ وَرَغمَ أَنفِ الشامِتِ
Indeed, I surely hope to attain union with him
I surely hope to attain union with him,
through tenderness from him—to the gloating foe’s chagrin.
Through his kindness, and in spite of the gloater.
