قُلsay لِاِبنِto the son of طَوقٍTawq رَحىmillstone of سَعدٍSaʿd إِذاwhen خَبَطَتbattered
نَوائِبُthe calamities of الدَهرِtime أَعلاهاits top وَأَسفَلَهاand its bottom
Say to Ibn Tawq, Saʿd’s millstone, when battered
by time’s calamities, top and bottom:
أَصبَحتَyou have become حاتِمَهاits Hatim جوداًin generosity وَأَحنَفَهاand its Ahnaf
حِلماًin forbearance وَكَيِّسَهاand its Kayyis عِلماًin learning وَدَغفَلَهاand its Daghfal
You have become its Hatim in generosity, and its Ahnaf
in forbearance, and its Kayyis in learning, and its Daghfal.
ماليwhy do I أَرىsee الحُجرَةَthe chamber الفَيحاءَspacious مُقفَلَةًlocked
عَنّيagainst me وَقَدand indeed طالَماso often اِستَفتَحتُI have sought to open مُقفَلَهاits locked door
Why do I see the spacious chamber locked
against me, though I have so often sought to open its locked door?
كَأَنَّهاas though it were جَنَّةُthe Garden of الفِردَوسِParadise مُعرِضَةًturning away
وَلَيسَand there is no ليfor me عَمَلٌdeed زاكٍrighteous فَأَدخُلَهاso that I may enter it
As though it were the Garden of Paradise, turning away,
and I had no righteous deed by which to enter it.
