أَلآنَnow? خُلِّيَتِwere let loose الذُؤبانُthe wolves فيamong الغَنَمِthe sheep
أَلآنَ خُلِّيَتِ الذُؤبانُ في الغَنَمِ
وَصِرتَand you became أَضيَعَmore defenseless مِنthan لَحمٍmeat عَلىon وَضَمِa butcher's block
وَصِرتَ أَضيَعَ مِن لَحمٍ عَلى وَضَمِ
Have the wolves now been let loose among the sheep,
and have you become more defenseless than meat on a butcher's block?
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were تَحكيyou resemble حَطيطاًHatit صالِحاًrighteous فَغَدَتthen became
قَد كُنتَ تَحكي حَطيطاً صالِحاً فَغَدَت
فَخذاكَyour two thighs أَكتَبَbetter at writing مِنthan كَفَّيكَyour two hands بِالقَلَمِwith the pen
فَخذاكَ أَكتَبَ مِن كَفَّيكَ بِالقَلَمِ
You once resembled righteous Hatit; then
your thighs grew better at writing with the pen than your hands.
وَكُنتُand I used to أَدعوكَI call you عَبدَservant of اللَهِGod قَبلُbefore فَقَدbut indeed
وَكُنتُ أَدعوكَ عَبدَ اللَهِ قَبلُ فَقَد
أَصبَحتُI have become أَدعوكَI call you زَيداًZayd غَيرَnot مُحتَشِمِabashed
أَصبَحتُ أَدعوكَ زَيداً غَيرَ مُحتَشِمِ
And I used to call you Abdullah; but now
I have come to call you Zayd without embarrassment.
وَاجَرتَand you rewarded جوداًgenerosity بِماwith what قَدindeed كُنتَyou used to تَمنَعُهُyou withhold it
وَاجَرتَ جوداً بِما قَد كُنتَ تَمنَعُهُ
ماnot كُلُّall جودِgenerosity الفَتىthe young man يُدنيbrings closer مِنَto الكَرَمِnobility
ما كُلُّ جودِ الفَتى يُدني مِنَ الكَرَمِ
And you repaid generosity with what you once withheld;
not all a young man's generosity brings him closer to nobility.
إِنif أُبلَI am tried فيكَthrough you بِأَنby the fact that أَصبَحتَyou have become مَنتَهَباًplundered
إِن أُبلَ فيكَ بِأَن أَصبَحتَ مَنتَهَباً
فَالمَرءُfor a man قَدmay يُبتَلىbe tried فيthrough صالِحِthe virtuous among الحُرُمِthe womenfolk
فَالمَرءُ قَد يُبتَلى في صالِحِ الحُرُمِ
If I am tried through you, now that you have become prey,
for a man may be tried through the virtuous women of his household.
