وَكَيفَand how يَختَلِفانِcan the two diverge الساقُthe leg وَالقَدَمُand the foot
My mountain path and Ubayd Allah's are joined;
and how could the leg and foot diverge?
صَمصامَتيmy Ṣamṣāmah اِتَّهَمونيthey mistrusted me مِنover صِيانَتِهاsafeguarding it

My Ṣamṣāmah—they mistrusted me over its safekeeping;
was Amr ever mistrusted with Ṣamṣām?
سَيفيmy sword الَّذيwhich حَدُّهُits edge مِنon جانِبيmy side أَبَداًalways

My sword, whose edge toward me is ever
blunt, yet against hostile folk keen to cleave.
ذُقناwe tasted الصُدودَestrangement فَلَمّاthen when اِقتادَit led أَرسُنَناour halters
حَنَّتit cried in longing حَنينَthe yearning of عَجولٍa bereaved she-camel بَينَناbetween us الرَحِمُkinship
We tasted estrangement; when it led us by our halters,
the kinship between us cried like a bereaved she-camel.
سَيَعلَمُwill learn الهَجرُestrangement أَنّاthat we مِنfor إِساءَتِهِits ill-treatment

Estrangement will learn that for its ill-treatment
and injustice we take revenge through sweet reunion.
أَمّاas for الوُجوهُthe faces فَكانَتthen they were وَهيَwhile they عابِسَةٌfrowning
أَمّاas for القُلوبُthe hearts فَكانَتthen they were وَهيَwhile they تَبتَسِمُthey smiled
As for our faces, they were frowning;
as for our hearts, they were smiling.
سَعايَةٌslander مِنfrom رِجالٍmen لاno طَباخَworth بِهِمin them
قالواthey spoke بِماof what جَهِلواthey were ignorant of فيناabout us وَماand not عَلِمواthey knew
Slander from men devoid of worth—
they spoke of us in ignorance, without knowledge.
سَعَواthey slandered فَلَمّاthen when تَلاقَتmet وُحشُناour wild ones زَعَمَتdeclared
أَخلاقُناour virtues الغُرُّradiant فيناabout us غَيرَother than ماwhat زَعَمواthey claimed
They slandered; but when our wild, estranged selves met,
our radiant virtues told a different tale of us than theirs.
فَأَرزَمَتthen they moaned أَنفُسٌsouls قَدalready كُنَّthey had been واحِدَةًone
لِوالِدٍof a father واحِدٍone فيin أَنفِهِhis nose شَمَمُa proud high bridge
Then souls that had once been one moaned in longing,
born of one father with a proud, high-bridged nose.
إِنّاindeed we خَدَمناwe served القِلىhatred جَهلاًin ignorance بِناof ourselves وَعَمىًand blindness
فَاليَومَbut today نَحنُwe جَميعاًall together لِلرِضاfor goodwill خَدَمُservants
We served hatred, ignorant of ourselves and blind;
but today we are all servants of goodwill.
