I bear witness: your dwellings have fallen desolate since I left,
and faded as patterned stripes fade from a cloak.

O tears, help me against the dwellers of Najd!

By my life, you have worn out the freshness of weeping
with weeping, and through it renewed longing's threadbare fabric.

separation in its turns—slender ones, lovely of figure!

she had brought you the sides of her neck from a solitary gazelle fawn.

and an auspicious moon, and a meager trickle of favor.

Beauties that separation's miseries have never ceased
to veil—or else the miseries of rejection.

I shall tax my resolve and my mounts, for I
see that easy bounty is drawn only from toil.

Then striving has not dealt earnestly with us unless you see wealth
unalloyed, when fortune is refined by striving.

toward you, bearing a tangled hope!

They bore us proudly through the night, striding swiftly; and only
in swift travel's shelter does success spend night and evening.

Heading at a hurried pace toward Abu al-

Toward one radiant in character: all he has gathered belongs to generosity,
and all he gathers, and whatever affairs he conceals or reveals.

A young man whom obedience to bounty has never ceased to lead
to a straitened life and unstinted nobility.

When he promises, his hands rain down and offer
you success, borne on the shoulder of his promise.

Heavy with bounty, his two hands are revealed as noble deeds unfold,
as rain parts to reveal lightning and thunder.

To reach you, we razed what had been built upon their backs
by spring-fed stretches of earth—lofty palaces.

They traveled by night, carrying amends to reproach, and contentment
to anger, and a clear apology to rancor.
أَموسىO Musa بنَson of إِبراهيمَIbrahim دَعوَةَthe call of خامِسٍone five days without water

O Musa son of Ibrahim, hear the call of one five days athirst,
whose thirst is born of reproach, not the thirst of seeking water.

Hardy under calamities' rebukes when they turn cruel,
but not hardy under the rebukes of close friends.
أَتانيthere reached me مَعَwith الرُكبانِthe riders ظَنٌّa suspicion ظَنَنتَهُyou conceived it

A suspicion you conceived reached me with the riders;
I covered my head at it, ashamed before glory.
لَقَدindeed نَكَبَstruck down الغَدرُtreachery الوَفاءَfidelity بِساحَتيin my courtyard

إِذاًthen وَسَرَحتُand I let graze الذَمَّblame فيin مَسرَحِthe pasture of الحَمدِpraise
Treachery would indeed have struck fidelity down in my courtyard,
in that case, and I would have loosed blame in praise's pasture.
وَهَتَّكتُand I violated بِالقَولِwith speech الخَناfoul حُرمَةَthe sanctity of العُلىlofty honor

And I would have violated lofty honor's sanctity with foul speech,
and made freeborn poetry tread a slave's path.
نَسيتُI forgot إِذاًthen كَمhow many مِنof يَدٍa favor لَكَof yours شاكَلَتresembled

I would then have forgotten how many a favor of yours resembled
the hand of nearness, aiding a lovesick man against distance;
وَمِنand of زَمَنٍa season أَلبَستَنيهِyou clothed me in it كَأَنَّهُas though it were

and many a season you clothed me in, as though it were—
when its days are recalled—the season of roses.
وَأَنَّكَand that you أَحكَمتَmade firm الَّذيwhat بَينَbetween فِكرَتيmy thought

And that you made firm what lay between my thought
and rhymes: a pledged bond and a binding covenant.
وَأَصَّلتَand you unsheathed شِعريmy poetry فَاِعتَلىso it rose above رَونَقَthe brilliance of الضُحىmorning
وَلَولاكَand but for you لَمnot يَظهَرhave emerged زَماناًever مِنَfrom الغِمدِthe sheath
And you unsheathed my poetry, and it outshone the brilliance of morning;
but for you, it would never have emerged from its sheath.
وَكَيفَand how وَماwhile not أَخلَلتُI fell short بَعدَكَsince parting from you بِالحِجاin good sense
وَأَنتَand you فَلَمso not تُخلِلyou have fallen short بِمَكرُمَةٍin a noble deed بَعديafter my departure
How could I, when I have not failed in reason since leaving you,
and you have neglected no noble deed since I left?
أَأُلبِسُshall I clothe هُجرَthe foulness of القَولِspeech مَنone whom لَوif هَجَوتُهُI lampooned him
إِذاًthen لَهَجانيwould surely lampoon me عَنهُon his behalf مَعروفُهُhis kindness عِنديtoward me
Shall I clothe such a man in foul speech? Were I to lampoon him,
his kindness to me would then lampoon me in his defense.
كَريمٌa generous man مَتىwhenever أَمدَحهُI praise him أَمدَحهُI praise him وَالوَرىand all mankind

A generous man: whenever I praise him, I praise him with all mankind
beside me; whenever I blame him, I blame him alone.
وَلَوand even if لَمnot يَزَعنيrestrained me عَنكَfrom you غَيرَكَother than you وازِعٌa restrainer
لَأَعدَيتَنيyou would surely infect me بِالحِلمِwith forbearance إِنَّindeed العُلىnobility تُعديis contagious
Even if no restraint but yourself held me back from you,
you would have infected me with forbearance: nobility is contagious.
أَبىforbade ذاكَthat أَنّيthat I لَستُI am not أَعرِفُrecognize دائِماًone steadfast
عَلىin سُؤدُدٍnobility حَتّىuntil يَدومَhe remains steadfast عَلىto العَهدِthe pledge
That is ruled out, for I count no one steadfast
in nobility unless he remains steadfast to his pledge.
وَأَنّيand that I رَأَيتُhave seen الوَسمَthe mark فيin خُلُقِthe character of الفَتىa young man
هُوَit is الوَسمُthe true mark لاnot ماwhat كانَwas فيon الشَعرِhair وَالجِلدِand skin
And I have seen that the mark in a man's character
is the true mark, not whatever is on his hair and skin.
أَرُدُّI hold back يَديmy hand عَنfrom عِرضِthe honor of حُرٍّa freeborn man وَمَنطِقيand my speech
وَأَملَأُهاand I fill it مِنwith لِبدَةِthe mane of الأَسَدِthe lion الوَردِtawny
I hold my hand and my speech back from a freeborn man's honor,
and fill my hand with the mane of a tawny lion.
فَإِنso if يَكُthere is جُرمٌan offense عَنَّhas arisen أَوor تَكُthere is هَفوَةٌa lapse

So if an offense has arisen, or a lapse occurred
unintentionally on my part, my plea for pardon is deliberate.
