and tested them with my searching methods.

I trotted through the days until they wore away
both sides of my hump and assailed my withers,

braving the paths of ambition, seeking
from them and in them to catch a livelihood in flight.

My two fortunes, good and ill—know this—
are two collars around the neck of prevailing fate.

a friend pardons and forgives a friend.

Satire was absent; its wondrous art returned against you;

Do not try to bewilder me by shutting me out, for I am
quick-witted and well aware of whoever tries to deceive me.

Do not incur—your face's terrain is rock—
the useless expense of a doorkeeper.

You are not the first man, last in worth,
to grow rich, then stint what was rightfully due.

No evidence is more shaming to one who denies his baseness
than seeing him indifferent to someone seeking his favor.

companionable ones that serve as a rider's provisions.
