I shall thank the two sons of Wahb for the gift that

is affection, which they both preserved by tending it well.

Ruin upon any dire calamity they both stood against,

and a fetter for dark adversity they assail in turn.

You both overflowed with rainclouds’ drizzle and downpour,

and with kindness in its first bloom and youthful vigor.

Have I any excuse on the morning of the race, when you both

are within my sight on the day of the contest?

I found you both a mountain against my time’s reversals,

and you have always been—may you ever remain—among its peaks.

So it became my prey beneath my neck,

and but for you both, I would have been beneath its neck.

And you both gave me mastery of an unruly she-camel and her nose-peg,

and power over a headstrong horse and its reins.

Though, when I sought a goal, you both were absent at its outset,

your two deeds indeed delighted me in its later course.

And what good is lightning flashing out of season,

and a valley brimming before its time?

You both coaxed Time until it answered me,

though the ills of its days had crippled my leg.

You both have always been its hard nabʿ-wood when tested

by oppression, and in generosity, its supple bamboo.

By my life, you both have indeed given Kindness a companion,

whose eloquent tongue holds your bounty in trust.

He receives from your hands and your affection,

so no wonder you both receive from his tongue.
