May the eyes of rainclouds and the steady rains shower you on my behalf.

And your life passed, with blessings joined to it.

    فَالصَبرُ لا صَقَبٌ مِنّي وَلا أَمَمُ

    You are now neither close to me nor within reach;

so patience is neither close to me nor within reach.

You turned away from me; the eye’s tears stream,

weeping for reunion, and the heart’s water streams.

Indeed, to be seen alive, though you have been borne

away by separation, O brother of my soul, fills me with shame.

If I do not hold a mourning gathering for parting, summoning to it

the faithful, then my love for you is suspect.

Your two likenesses, whenever the day grows fierce:

the lion of the lair and the keen-cutting Ṣamṣāmah sword.

Such bounty as yours—when you give without a promise

what is hoped from you—neither Kaʿb nor Harim bestowed.
