nor may glory suffer bereavement at your loss.

مِن بَعضِ أَيدي الضَنى وَاِستَأسَدَ البَخَلُ
Generosity dwindled when a hand was stretched toward you
from among the hands of wasting sickness, and miserliness grew bold as a lion.

No hope remained in the breast of anyone seeking a favor
but that very hope had melted away with sickness.

While things were thus, and the world stood in peril,
and kindness implored the Most Merciful on your behalf,

God bestowed you on those against whom, but for you,
the nights would have charged, with swift strides and trots.

وَالرُمحُ يَنآدُ حيناً ثُمَّ يَعتَدِلُ
A sickness was granted healing that scattered it;
and a spear bends awhile, then straightens.

وَالنَجمُ يَخمِدُ شَيئاً ثُمَّ يَشتَعِلُ
A complexion changed, then God restored its bloom;
and a star dims a little, then blazes.

A reward came to you though you had not worked for it—yet indeed,
the reflection of one steadfast in affirming His oneness is work.
