Abu Sa'id's riding camels have hastened to depart;
so may they be blessed with good fortune and faith.

This is Muhammad; I found no redress
save through him against the calamities of my time.

This is he whose two hands knew my courtyard,
after the miser had known nothing of my whereabouts.

Look at him—how much travels behind him:
a load of kindness and beneficence!

I shall surely bid you farewell; then my eye will weep.
Indeed, tears are the second farewell.

And after you I shall fast from all but you, and go forth at dawn,
wearing two fasts about my neck in Ramadan.

And you shall surely know that remembrance of you—until you are seen
returning joyful—is my tongue's boon companion.

He forgot your virtues, whose fruits
are the pleasure-ground of hopes at all times.
فيin فُرقَةِparting from الأَحبابِloved ones شُغلٌa preoccupation شاغِلٌall-consuming
وَالثُكلُand bereavement صِرفاًpure and simple فُرقَةُparting from الإِخوانِbrothers
In parting from loved ones lies an all-consuming care;
and sheer bereavement is parting from brothers.
