    فَلِلخُطوبِ إِذا سامَحتَها عُقَبُ

    Bear delay patiently, so long as falsehood does not follow it;

    For misfortunes, if you bear with them, have their endings.

    Blame rests with fate, if I am charged with it

    By a just man; my duty is to strive and seek.

    O king who is distant from sight,

    Yet whose bounty is near to those who hope for his bounty.

    إِنَّ السَماءَ تُرَجّى حينَ تَحتَجِبُ

    The veil does not turn my hope away from you;

    Indeed, the sky is looked to with hope when it is veiled.

    وَلا وَراءَكَ لي مَثوىً وَمُطَّلَبُ

    Apart from your door, I have no door at which to seek refuge;

    Nor beyond you have I any dwelling or goal.

    O best of those heard of by an ear and seen

    By an eye, and of those whose doors the Arabs have visited.

    وَفي كَلامِكَ غُرُّ المالِ يُنتَهَبُ

    As for silence, it is folded around a promise;

    And in your speech, the choicest wealth is plundered.
