أَعَبدَO ʿAbd اللَهِAllāh قُمstand up وَاِقعُدand sit down بِهَجريby shunning me
فَقَدfor indeed أُلقيتَyou have been cast out مِنfrom باليmy mind وَفِكريand my thoughts
O ʿAbdallāh, go on—stand or sit—shunning me;
O ʿAbd Allāh, rise and sit, shunning me;
for I have cast you out of my mind and thoughts.
For you have been cast out of my mind and thoughts.
وَقَدand indeed أَخلَيتُI have cleared away حُبَّكَlove for you مِنfrom ضُلوعيmy ribs
وَكانَand it was مُوَشِّحاًgirdling قَلبيmy heart وَصَدريand my breast
I have emptied my ribs of your love,
And I have emptied my ribs of love for you,
though it once lay like a sash across my heart and breast.
Which once girdled my heart and breast.
يَموتُdie مَشايِخُelders الكُتّابِthe scribes هَزلاًof emaciation
وَرِزقُكَand your livelihood أَنتَyou فيat السِتّينَsixty years of age يَجريflows
The elders among the secretaries die wasted thin,
The elder scribes waste away and die,
while your livelihood still flows at sixty.
Yet your livelihood still flows to you at sixty.
نِفاقُكَyour hypocrisy فيin الخُشونَةِharshness عَنكَabout you يُنبيreveals

بِأَنَّكَthat you تَستَطيلُact overbearingly بِحُسنِrelying on the goodness of صَبريmy patience
Your hypocrisy in harshness gives you away:
Your hypocrisy in harshness makes it plain
you take liberties because of my gracious patience.
That you presume upon my gracious patience.
سَبَقتَyou have surpassed مُؤاجِريthose who hire themselves out بَغداذَBaghdad جَمعاًall together
فَقَدfor indeed أَحرَزتَyou have attained غايَةَthe pinnacle of كُلِّall فَخرِglory
You have surpassed all who employed me in Baghdad,
You have surpassed all Baghdad's men for hire,
and thus attained the pinnacle of every glory.
For you have attained the pinnacle of all glory.
أُولَئِكَthose واجَرواhired themselves out يَوماًa day بِيَومٍby the day
وَأَنتَand you مُؤاجِرٌone who hires himself out شَهراًa month بِشَهرِby the month
Those men hired me one day at a time;
Those men hired themselves out day by day,
whereas you, my employer, do so month by month.
While you hire yourself out month by month.
