O Malik, grief is but the dreams of a dreamer;
and however long it lasts, heartache is not everlasting.

O Malik, excessive longing leaves
a bend and crookedness in the spear-shaft of noble virtues.

Consider calmly: can you count a man unscathed,
back to Adam—or count the son of anyone unscathed?

who saddened the wind, so it grew more plaintive at his loss,
and brought sorrow into the weeping of doves—

yet before him our Prophet had indeed been stricken:
Abu al-Qasim, the manifest light, by the loss of Qasim.

And Ali said to Ash'ath while offering condolences,
and feared he might incur some of those sins:

and so be rewarded—or let grief fade as beasts do?”

suddenly or from grief—Adi ibn Hatim.
