تَلَقّاهُmet him طَيفيmy phantom فيin الكَرىslumber فَتَجَنَّباso he turned away
وَقَبَّلتُand I kissed يَوماًone day ظِلَّهُhis shadow فَتَغَضَّباso he grew angry
My phantom met him in slumber, so he turned away.
And one day I kissed his shadow, so he grew angry.
وَخُبِّرَand he was told أَنّيthat I قَدhad مَرَرتُI passed بِبابِهِby his door
لِأَخلِسَto steal furtively مِنهُfrom him نَظرَةًa glance فَتَحَجَّباso he veiled himself
And he was told that I had passed by his door
To steal a glance at him, so he veiled himself.
وَلَوand if مَرَّتِpassed الريحُthe wind الصَباthe east wind عِندَby أُذنِهِhis ear
بِذِكريwith mention of me لَسَبَّhe would surely curse الريحَthe wind أَوor لَتَعَتَّباhe would surely reproach
And if the east wind passed by his ear
With mention of me, he would curse the wind or reproach it.
وَلَمand did not تَجرِpass مِنّيof me خَطرَةٌa passing thought بِضَميرِهِthrough his mind
فَتَظهَرَand become apparent إِلّاexcept كُنتَyou were فيهاin it مُسَبَّباreviled
And no passing thought of me crossed his mind
And came to light without your being reviled in it.
وَماand not زادَهُincreased him عِنديin my eyes قَبيحُthe ugliness of فَعالِهِhis deeds
وَلاnor الصَدُّrejection وَالإِعراضُand aversion إِلّاexcept تَحَبُّباdearness
And his ugly deeds did nothing to my regard for him,
Nor did his rejection and aversion, except make him dearer.
