مَتىwhen كانَwas سَمعيmy hearing خُلسَةًsomething stealthily snatched لِلَّوائِمِfor reproaching women
وَكَيفَand how صَغَتinclined to listen لِلعاذِلاتِto the chiding women عَزائِميmy resolves
When was my hearing ever prey to reproaching women?
When did my hearing become secretly receptive to blamers,
And how have my resolves ever heeded the women who chide?
And how did my determination incline towards censurers?
إِذاif المَرءُa man أَبقىleft بَينَbetween رَأيَيهِhis two judgments ثُلمَةًa breach
تُسَدُّis closed بِتَعنيفٍby harsh rebuke فَلَيسَthen he is not بِحازِمِat all resolute
If a man leaves a breach between his two judgments
When a man leaves a gap between his two opinions,
that is closed by harsh rebuke, then he is not resolute.
It is blocked by rebuke - he is no resolute one.
I shall cause to be trampled أَهلَthe people of العَسكَرِal-ʿAskar (the camp) الآنَnow عَسكَراًan army
مِنَof الذُلِّhumiliation مَحّاءًa thorough obliterator لِتِلكَof those المَعالِمِthe landmarks
I shall now have the people of al-ʿAskar trampled by an army
I will now tread upon the people of warfare with an army
of humiliation, wiping out those landmarks.
That will erase those landmarks out of humiliation.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I ماnot حورِفتُI was denied success فيin طَلَبِseeking العُلىgreatness
وَلَكِنَّكُمbut you حورِفتُمُyou were denied success فيin المَكارِمِnoble deeds
For I was not denied success in seeking greatness;
I was not deviant in seeking highness,
but you were denied success in noble deeds.
But you were deviant in noble deeds.
رُوَيداًwait a little يَقِرُّwill settle الأَمرُthe matter فيin مُستَقَرِّهِits proper place
فَماfor ... not المَجدُglory عَمّاconcerning what تَفعَلونَyou do بِنائِمِat all asleep
Wait a little; the matter will settle in its proper place;
Gently, the matter will settle in its settlement,
for glory does not sleep through what you do.
So why the glory in what you are doing, oh sleepers?
وَماand ... no لِيَI have مِنany ذَنبٍoffense إِلىagainst الرِزقِsustenance خِلتُهُI reckoned it

And I reckon I have no offense against sustenance
I am not to blame for the lack of provision,
save my hope in you for great deeds.
Except for my hope in you for great things.
بِعَينِunder the eye of العُلىgreatness أَصبَحتُمُyou have become بَينَbetween هادِمٍa destroyer

Under greatness's gaze, you are now either destroyers
With aspiration for highness, you have become between a destroyer,
of its loftiest pillars or builders who are like destroyers.
Its highest pillars, and one who is destructive.
لَعَمرُby the life of النَوىseparation لازِلتُI have not ceased بَعدَafter مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
مُسِحّاًpouring copiously عَلَيهِupon him بِالدُموعِwith tears السَواجِمِstreaming freely
By separation's life, since Muhammad's passing I have not ceased
By the life of piety, I still, after Muhammad,
pouring streaming tears down upon him.
Stroke it with pouring tears.
فَتىًa youth فَيصَلِيُّsword-sharp العَزمِresolve يَعلَمُhe knows أَنَّهُthat he

نَشاgrew up رَأيُهُhis judgment بَينَamong السُيوفِthe swords الصَوارِمِkeen-edged
A youth of sword-sharp resolve, who knows that
A young man - his determination knows
his judgment grew up among keen-edged swords.
That his opinion sprouted between sharp swords.
إِذاwhenever سارَjourneyed فيهِconcerning him الظَنُّexpectation كانَhe was بِكُلِّwith all ماthat which
يُؤَمَّلُis hoped for مِنfrom جَدواهُhis bounty أَوَّلَthe first قادِمِto arrive
Whenever expectation journeyed toward him, he was—with all that
When suspicion flowed through it, it was with everything
was hoped for from his bounty—the first to arrive.
That was hoped for from his violence or the first comer.
أَساءَتtreated badly يَداهُhis two hands عِشرَةَcompanionship with المالِwealth بِالنَدىthrough generosity

His two hands, through generosity, were poor companions to wealth,
His hands did wrongly in giving away wealth in hospitality,
and nobly succeeded Hatim among us.
And did good by us in succeeding Hatem.
