If only you could see him, O Abū al-Ḥasan—
If only you could see him, O Abu al-Hasan,
a moon risen high upon a bough,
a moon risen above the bough;
قَمَراًa moon أَلقَتcast جَواهِرُهُhis jewels
قَمَراً أَلقَت جَواهِرُهُ
فيinto فُؤاديmy heart جَوهَرَthe jewel الحَزَنِsorrow
في فُؤادي جَوهَرَ الحَزَنِ
a moon whose jewels have cast
a moon whose jewels have cast
into my heart the jewel of sorrow.
into my heart the jewel of sorrow.

Every portion of his beauty
Every part of his charms
contains elements of enchantment.
contains portions of temptation.

In his fashioning I find such novelties
In his form I find novelties
that they have drawn my heart away from tradition.
that have distracted my heart from established ways.

My father be ransom for the Helpers, a band
May my father be ransom for the Ansar, a band of men,
who aided my sickness against my body.
who aided my sickness against my body.
