You came to my aid as water aids one choking,

and you brought forth the downpour of a rain-laden cloud.

You renewed for me a hope whose grazers had been

lingering before this in a worn-out pursuit.

If Abu Ya‘qub’s nature were in a stone—

a hard stone—it would overflow with water gushing from it.

There is nothing beautiful in this world, nor anything good,

that does not have its greater share in that character.

What a favor from you! Were I not to lighten it

with gratitude, it could neither be borne nor endured.

With God’s help I ward off the claim of its crushing weight,

for I fear for my neck because of it.
