وَلَكِنbut حُرِمتُI was denied الدَرَّmilk وَالضَرعُwhile the udder حافِلُis full
Had scant-milked camels run dry, I would have excused their milch herd;
but I was denied milk while the udder was full.
I bestowed it on you تَشفيheals الجَوىheartache وَهوَwhile it is لاعِجٌburning
وَتَبعَثُand awakens أَشجانَthe sorrows of الفَتىthe young man وَهوَwhile he is ذاهِلُheedless
I bestowed it on you: it heals heartache when it burns,
and awakens a man's sorrows when he is heedless.
تَرُدُّbring back قَوافيهاits rhymes إِذاwhen هِيَthey أُرسِلَتare sent forth

Its rhymes bring back, when they are sent forth,
the strays of the people's glory, though they themselves roam untended.
فَكَيفَhow then إِذاwhen حَلَّيتَهاyou adorn it بِحُلِيِّهاwith its jewels
تَكونُwill it be وَهَذاwhile this is حُسنُهاits beauty وَهيَwhile it is عاطِلُunadorned
How, then, when you adorn it with its jewels,
will it be, when this is its beauty unadorned?

Our great ones, show us kindness, for we
have a deadly thirst, and you are watering places.
