فَدَيتُI would ransom مُحَمَّداًMuhammad مِنfrom كُلِّevery سوءٍharm
يُحاذَرُis feared فيin رَواحٍevening أَوor غُدُوِّmorning
I would ransom Muhammad from every harm
Feared in evening or morning.
أَياO قَمَرَmoon السَماءِthe sky سَفُلتَyou have sunk low حَتّىuntil
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready ضَجِرتَhave grown weary مِنَof العُلُوِّloftiness
O moon of the sky, you have sunk so low
That you seem to have grown weary of the heights.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you مِنfrom مُحِبِّكَone who loves you ذاhaving بِعادٍdistance
وَمِمَّنand from one who لاnot يُحِبُّكَloves you ذاhaving دُنُوِّcloseness
I saw you distant from the one who loves you,
And close to the one who does not love you.
فَلَوso even if أَنَّthat الصَباthe east wind حَمَلَتكَcarried you ماnot إِنreinforcing the negation
سَتَسبِقُنيyou will outstrip me الغَداةَtomorrow morning إِلىtoward السُلُوِّforgetfulness
So even if the east wind carried you, you would not
Outstrip me tomorrow morning in forgetting.
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you حَسرَةًsorrow لَكَfor you مِنfrom صَديقٍa friend
يَكونُis زِمامُهُhis rein بِيَديin the hands of عَدُوِّan enemy
And it is sorrow enough for you to have a friend
Whose reins are in an enemy's hands.
