I have never seen a caravan, unceasing in its toil,

continuing its midday march until dusk,

    farther from weariness and exhaustion

than this one, that morning of the rain-laden eastern cloud:

noble camels, yet not a true camel among them,

their necks rearing above their tailbones,

like night, or black lava stones, or black bees,

    following a jet-black cloud bank,

like followers gathered around their leader,

    obeying the south wind,

unravelling the tightly twisted cords of calamity,

blunting the edge of harsh times,

    effacing the persistent drought,

as touching the sacred Corner effaces sins.

When it appeared close to the earth,

the earth yearned for its streaming downpour,

with a sick man's longing for the physician,

and a lover's rapture for the beloved,

and a man of letters' joy in another.

    And it pitched camp, its downpour unfailing;

then thunder rose within it like an orator,

and the wind moaned like aged she-camels.

And the sun, its brow veiled,

    had set without truly setting.

And the earth, in its fresh robe,

amid its own bright, tender growth,

after snow and frost had whitened it,

was like an aging man, after years and stooping,

who had traded grey hair for youth.

How many a lonely region it gladdened,

and how many a rushing watercourse it opened,

and how much vanquished soil it overwhelmed,

and how many a distressed new shoot it relieved,

and how much of the restless south wind it stilled,

and satisfied many a vast stretch of land

that keeps faith with the rain in its absence.

Sweet in its saliva and its pouring rain,

as though it pours down upon hearts.
