حَسُنَتgrew beautiful عَبرَتيmy tear وَطابَand grew sweet نَحيبيmy sobbing
فيكَfor you ياO كَنزَtreasure كُلِّall حُسنٍbeauty وَطيبِand sweetness
My tears grew beautiful, and my sobbing sweet,
for you, O treasure of all beauty and sweetness.
لَكَyou have قَدٌّa figure أَدَقُّmore delicate مِنthan أَنto يُحاكىbe matched
بِقَضيبٍby a slender branch فيin الحُسنِbeauty أَوor بِكَثيبِby a sand dune
Your figure is too delicate to be matched
in beauty by a slender branch or a sand dune.
أَيُّwhat شَيءٍthing يَكونُcould be أَحسَنَlovelier مِنthan صَبٍّa lovesick lover
أَديبٍa man of letters مُتَيَّمٍenthralled بِأَديبِby a man of letters
What could be lovelier than a lovesick lover,
a man of letters, enthralled by a man of letters?
جارَtyrannized حُكميmy rule فيover قَلبِهِhis heart وَهَواهُand his passion
بَعدَafter ماthat جارَtyrannized حُكمُهُhis rule فيover القُلوبِhearts
My rule tyrannized over his heart and passion,
after his rule had tyrannized over hearts.
كادَalmost أَنto يَكتُبَwrite الهَوىlove بَينَbetween عَينَيtwo eyes
هِhis كِتاباًan inscription هَذاthis حَبيبُbeloved حَبيبِof Habib
Love almost wrote between his eyes
an inscription: “This is Habib’s beloved.”
غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I لَوif كُنتُI were أَعشَقُlove passionately نَفسيmyself
I would surely be troubled عَيشَهاits life بِالرَقيبِby the watcher
Yet if I were in love with myself,
I would find my life embittered by the watcher.
