بَيَّتَmade spend the night قَلبيmy heart مِنof هَواكَlove for you عَلىin a state of الطَوىhunger
وَرَحَلتُand I departed مِنfrom بَلَدِthe land الصَبابَةِardent longing وَالجَوىand heartache
Your love left my heart to spend the night famished,
My heart was made to spend the night starved of love for you,
and I departed the land of yearning and consuming grief.
and I departed the land of longing and heartache.
لَوif لَمnot يُجِرنيshelter me الهَجرُestrangement مِنكَfrom you بِلُطفِهِwith its kindness
وَاللَهِby God لَاِستَأمَنتُI would have sought refuge فيكَconcerning you إِلىto النَوىdistance
Had estrangement from you not granted me refuge in its kindness,
Had estrangement not sheltered me from you with its kindness,
by God, I would have sought the protection of distance against you.
by God, I would have sought refuge from you in distance.
لَمnot تَرعَyou heed ليfor me حُرَقاًburning pangs بِقَلبيin my heart قَدhad مَضَتpassed
لَوif لَمnot يَذُدهاdrive them away الدَمعُtears عَنهُfrom it لَاِشتَوىit would have been roasted
You gave no heed to the burning pangs my heart had already endured;
You paid no heed to the burning pangs that had coursed through my heart;
had tears not driven them from it, my heart would have been scorched.
had tears not driven them from it, it would have been roasted.
هَيهاتَalas كُنتُI was مِنَbecause of الحَداثَةِyouth وَالصِباand tender years
فيin غَفلَةٍheedlessness إِنَّindeed الهَوىlove يُنسيmakes one forget الهَوىlove
Far from that now—in youth and tender age I lived
Alas! Through youth and tender years, I was
heedless that one passion can make another be forgotten.
in heedlessness; indeed, love makes one forget love.
