He has turned away: he loves neither cool, sweet teeth nor spaced teeth,
He refused, no parting of lovers nor separation
Nor does he gaze upon eyes of vivid black and white, nor wide, dark eyes.
No desertion to endure, no loss to bemoan

Enough: his resolve has lifted from him
His determination has relieved him already
That infatuation and that longing, and both have passed.
Of that anguish and yearning, so they're gone

The events in their settings have left
The Khurramiyya neither head nor trunk.
The poem no beginning, no end to intone

Every fate that seemed sealed has come undone
And flung open every gate that had been bolted.
And every closed door is now open thrown

On Khushsh's earth, struck down before his men:
With a land that lays prostate at his people's feet prone

Your people would not have rejoiced to keep you with them forever,
It did not please your tribe for you to remain
While someone other than you had forced al-Kadhaj to surrender.
While another usurped what was yours to condone

When people heard of your victory, I said to them
Such battles—tell of them without restraint!
"Speak of it freely, conceal not what is known."

When your sword uprooted them entirely
Whatever had grown dark on either side of that land.
No trace remained in that region to be shown

Forced to follow the ignorant rabble of rebellion.
The rabble of discord were forced to disown

If mention of another’s skill shines bright
Then your renown has spread fragrance across the horizons.
Then yours in the horizon gleams and has grown

On the day hopes shine radiant upon you

Seek no twisting path, no detour to be shown

You suckled them at hardship's teat, and with it weaned
You nurtured them after detestable loss
Those among them who had been addicted to war before it.
Those among them once vociferous and prone

God be praised for your days, in which you tightened
By the days you deceived with Godliness
The braid of guidance, long since unraveled.
The rightly guided path long twisted and blown

As if abbreviating the faith’s long night
But Babak counted them as years, so long they were.
Your gateway has counted its months overblown

You strode into vacant land challenging all
As his adversary, while he was stuck fast in his two ravines.
Erect with ravines carved through its very bone

Since they rejected the Quran's proofs so clear
Your swords became proofs within their skulls.
Your swords through their skulls drove the message home

You met them with steeds ne’er seen askance
Unevenness or crookedness in its horsemen's ranks.
Nor in the ranks of their horses, defect or lone

Whenever dust rose high, its keen swords swept it away,
When the ostrich took flight, their Indian swords shone
And its slender blue spears cleared away that dust.
As their feathers fluttered, bright saffron blown

White swords and brown spears: whenever a torrent surged,
White and brown, when a cloud of them swarmed forth
Death's torrent—you waded with them through souls and lifeblood.
You harvested lives and severed many a groan

Swords so lethal when found in a breach
If they strike the throat's hollow or strike a jugular vein.
Or chanced on a gap could slice flesh to the bone

The two Humayds' counsel—you fertilized affairs with it;
The two praised your keen and prudent view
Whoever fertilizes counsel on battle's day brings forth offspring.
Of situations in days of chaos well known

You have excelled! The least a vein of kinship does is intertwine.
"Can the noblest man fail to rise and be grown?"

You encompassed prudence in your breast, a man of lofty ambitions,
You applied wisdom, stout heart and stiff spine
A dispeller of deep darkness, neither narrow nor constricted.
To reveal the obscure, no ordeal to disown

The land and its people, while you remain
While you live among them, whether Time flies or walks.
Shall never fear what the days have yet to hone

They titled your sword “the burning flames”
“The enemies' anguish,” and they named your counsel “Relief.”
The foemen's bane, and your view “the clear cone”

If Abu Nasr escapes you, 'twas his fate

Ask him yourself how he managed to flee flown

And dashed a pampered man's former hopes.

The darkness of war, bloody chaos well sown

And Yousufi steeds in days of fierce raids
Reckless, though they have known neither weak judgment nor recklessness.
Once thought crazed but knew no havoc to hone

To guide with the sword or trample and groan

They eulogize Muhammad now still in death
And they pour out tears over him with sobbing.
Laments stream for him as tears copious blown

Death passing the evening in their ranks, journeying by night and before dawn.

Else he would not have met his death so thrilled
He would not have died rejoicing in death, full of delight.
Nor yearned for demise with joy unrestrained shown

Night's full moon would forever seem ugly beside its beauty.
Would pale before their beauty, dimmed and o'erthrown
