مُكتَسٍ مِن مَكارِمٍ وَمَساعِ
A generous man has clothed us in summer attire,
We are clad in summer's tattered gown,
Himself clad in noble qualities and worthy deeds:
Robed in virtues and good deeds.

أَنَّهُ لَيسَ مِثلَهُ في الخِداعِ
Like a shimmering mirage in appearance, except
Like a shimmering mirage in description,
That it is not like it in deception.
Though not so deceptive in nature.

Fine linen: the wind makes its two sides tremble,
A reed shaking as the winds gust,
Obedient to the blowing wind’s command.
At their fierce, unbridled command.

كَبِدُ الصَبِّ أَو حَشا المُرتاعِ
Quivering, as though part of it were forever
Quaking as if it were time itself,
A lover’s liver or a frightened man’s vitals;
Or a gazelle spooked midst the panic.

Clinging to what follows, one would think
Of the two back muscles and the ribs.
It part of the swaying body and ribs.

It chases away the scorching day, though
In its heat to the day of farewell.
In its heat, it rivals the day of farewells.

Broad of heart and broad of arm.
Of heart’s expanse and arm’s reach.

مِن ثَناءٍ كَالبُردِ بُردِ الصَناعِ
I shall clothe you in what eclipses it:
I shall garb you in what pardons
Praise like a striped cloak—a skilled craftswoman’s cloak.
All praise, like the cool of crafted mail.

The beauty of that is in the eyes; as for this,
The beauty of your eyes, and this,
Its beauty is in hearts and ears.
The beauty of hearts and ears.
