I lodged my saddle in the verdant pasture,
I pitched my tent in the withering meadow
So I grazed in the wake of the rain-shedding clouds.
And grazed in the wake of the pouring clouds
مَنwho مُبلِغٌwill inform أَفناءَthe clans of يَعرُبَYa'rub كُلَّهاall of them
أَنّيthat I اِبتَنَيتُbuilt for myself الجارَthe neighbor قَبلَbefore المَنزِلِthe dwelling
Who will tell all the clans of Ya'rub
Who will convey to the Bedouin encampments
That I built myself a neighbor before a home?
That I built my neighbor before my house
وَأَخَذتُand I took hold بِالطِوَلِof the long tether الَّذيthat لَمnot يَنصَرِمwas severed
ثِنياهُits two strands وَالعَقدُand the knot الَّذيthat لَمnot يُحلَلِwas undone
And I grasped the tether, never broken
And held fast to enduring covenants
In its two strands, and the knot that is never undone.
Unraveling neither their knots nor twine
هَتَكَrent الظَلامَthe darkness أَبوAbu الوَليدِal-Walid بِغُرَّةٍwith a radiant brow
فَتَحَتopened لَناfor us بابَthe door of الرَجاءِhope المُقفَلِlocked
Abu al-Walid rent the darkness with a radiant brow
Abu al-Walid rent the darkness with a raid
That opened for us the locked door of hope.
Opening for us the door of hope shut fast
بِأَتَمَّwith one more perfect مِنthan قَمَرِthe moon of السَماءِheaven وَإِنand even if بَداit appears
بَدراًa full moon وَأَحسَنَand fairer فيto العُيونِthe eyes وَأَجمَلِand lovelier
With one more perfect than heaven's moon, even if it appears
More perfect than the moon in the heavens though it appears
Full—and fairer to the eyes, and lovelier;
A full moon, most beautiful in the eyes and most glorious
وَأَجَلَّand greater مِنthan قُسٍّQuss إِذاwhen اِستَنطَقتَهُyou ask him to speak

And greater than Quss, when you ask him to speak,
Wiser than an old spear when you seek its counsel
In judgment, subtler in affairs, and more eloquent.
In judgment, gentlest in affairs and most generous
شَرخٌa root مِنَof الشَرَفِnobility المُنيفِlofty يَهُزُّهُstirs him
هَزَّas the brandishing of الصَفيحَةِthe sword blade شَرخُthe first flush of عُمرٍlife مُقبِلِburgeoning
A root of lofty nobility stirs him,
A crack of highborn nobility that shakes it
As the first flush of burgeoning life brandishes a blade.
Like the crack of an imminent earthquake shakes a platter
فَاِسلَمso live unharmed لِجِدَّةِfor the freshness of سُؤدُدٍeminence مُستَقبَلٍforthcoming

So live unharmed, for fresh eminence yet to come,
So surrender to the severity of ensuing epochs
Pristine, and for the mantle of youth awaiting you.
And the coldness of approaching youth
كَمhow many أَدَّتِbrought forth الأَيّامُthe days مِنof حَدَثٍa young man كَفَتwarded off

How many a youth have the days brought forth! Averted
How many events has time concealed
By his days was time's grievous calamity.
That his days concealed the riddles of time

Drought he dispels, never bewildered by it;
Bearing but not burdened with position
And the burden he bears, yet is not weighed down.
And bearing the weight but not weighed down
وَالخَطبُand calamity أُمَّتwas wounded to the brain مِنكَby you أُمُّthe membrane of دِماغِهِits brain

And calamity's brain membrane was pierced by you,
From you, the affairs of the nation took
By the shrewd, resolute-hearted, resourceful one.
The mother of rationality, the fickle soul

And many an assembly, armed with the arrows of speech,
And a sermon whose eloquence arms it
Where speech is engulfed in turmoil that will not clear:
With words immersed in ceaseless waves
قَولٌspeech تَظَلُّcontinues مُتونُهُits substance مُنهَلَّةًpouring forth
سَمَّينِtwo poisons بَينَbetween مُقَشَّبٍcompounded وَمُثَمَّلِand steeped
Speech whose substance keeps pouring forth
A discourse whose texts remain saturated
Two poisons, one compounded and one steeped.
Lush, between desiccated and decayed

You dispelled its darkness with a decisive oration;
You burst its darkness with the sermon of reconciliation
Its likeness amid terror is a thrust of a cleaving sword.
A stab like the one from the sword of reconciliation
