عَيّاشُʿAyyāsh ياO ذاpossessor of البُخلِstinginess وَالتَصريدِand scant giving
وَسُلالَةَand offspring of التَضييقِrestriction وَالتَنكيدِand vexation
ʿAyyāsh, O man of stinginess and scant giving,
O Ayyash, you miserly and harsh man
and offspring of restriction and vexation:
From a lineage of meanness and oppression
البَردُcold يَقتُلُkills وَالكَزازُand bitter chill بِدونِwithout ماwhat
أَحكَمتَهُyou perfected it مِنof شِدَّةِthe intensity of التَبريدِchilling
Cold and bitter chill kill, even without
The cold kills, and the stove without what
the fierce chilling you have perfected.
You made so extremely cold
لُؤمٌbaseness تَدينُyou embrace as faith بِحُلوِهِin its sweetness وَبِمُرِّهِand in its bitterness
فَكَأَنَّهُso it is as though جُزءٌa part مِنَof التَوحيدِbelief in God's oneness
Baseness you embrace as faith, in its sweetness and bitterness,
An infidel who believes in the sweet and the bitter
as though it were part of belief in God's oneness.
As though it is part of God's oneness
لَيُسَوِّدَنَّwill surely blacken يَفاعَthe upper part of وَجهِكَyour face مَنطِقيmy speech
أَضعافَmany times ماwhat سَوَّدتَyou blackened وَجهَthe face of قَصيديmy verse
My words will surely blacken your lofty brow,
My words will blacken your face manifold
many times more than you blackened the face of my verse.
More than you blackened the face of my poem
وَلَيَفضَحَنَّكَand will surely disgrace you فيin المَحافِلِthe gatherings كُلِّهاall of them
صَدريmy departure كَماjust as فَضَحَتdisgraced يَداكَyour two hands وُروديmy arrival
And in every gathering you will surely be shamed
And my chest will expose you in all gatherings
by my departure, as your hands shamed my arrival.
As your hands exposed my roses
ماnot كانَhad خَبَّرَنيtold me القِياسُinference بِباطِلٍwith falsehood
عَنكُمabout you وَلَكِنbut جُرتُI strayed فيin التَقليدِuncritical imitation
Inference had told me nothing false
Reasoning did not inform me falsely about you
about you, but I went astray in following others.
But I followed tradition
فَطَرَحتُso I thrust out فيin طَمَعيmy greed يَداًa hand أَخرَجتُهاI withdrew it
مِنfrom طاعَةِobedience to التَوفيقِgood fortune وَالتَسديدِand right guidance
So in my greed I thrust out a hand I had withdrawn
So I stretched out a hand I had withdrawn
from obedience to good fortune and right guidance.
From obeying guidance and righteousness
وَرَجَوتُand I hoped for نائِلَكُمyour bounty رَجاءَكُمُyour hope for العُلاgreatness
بِتَذَكُّرِwith remembrance of العِلجانِthe ʿiljān plant وَاليَعضيدِand the yaʿḍīd plant
And I hoped for your bounty as you hope for greatness,
And I hoped for your heights with your hopes
with remembrance of the ʿiljān and yaʿḍīd plants.
Remembering the twisted and the crooked
وَنَسيتُand I forgot سوءَthe evil of فَعالِكُمyour deeds نِسيانَكُمyour forgetting of
آساسَكُمyour roots فيin كورَةِthe district of البَشرودِal-Bashrūd
And I forgot the evil of your deeds as you forgot
And I forgot your misdeeds, your forgetfulness
your roots in the district of al-Bashrūd.
Your foundation in the land of confusion
