بِعَقليthrough my reason هَذاthis صِرتُI became أُحدوثَةَthe talk الرَكبِof the caravan
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was فيin سَلمٍpeace فَأَصبَحتُso I became فيin حَربِwar
Through this reason of mine, I became the talk of the caravan.
With this mind I have become the talk of the town
And I had been at peace, but came to be at war.
Though once I lived in peace, now engulfed in strife
لَعَمرٌوsurely ʿAmr مَعَwith الرَمضاءِthe scorching ground وَالنارُand the fire تَلتَظيblazes
أَرَقُّgentler وَأَحفىand more caring مِنكَthan you فيin ساعَةِthe hour الكَربِof distress
Surely ʿAmr, with the scorching ground and the fire blazing,
In dire thirst, as fire rages in summer’s heat
is gentler and more caring than you in the hour of distress.
I'm more watchful and careful than you in times of distress
مَتىwhen أَتَبَغّىdo I seek النِصفَfair treatment مِنfrom قَلبِthe heart صاحِبٍof a companion
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنis قَلبيmy heart شَفيقاًcompassionate عَلىtoward قَلبيmy heart
When can I seek fair treatment from a companion’s heart,
Why would I expect half the heart of a friend
if my heart is not compassionate toward my own heart?
If my own heart has no sympathy for itself?
فَمَنso whoever ماتَdied مِنof حُبٍّlove فَإِنّيthen indeed I مَيِّتٌam destined to die
لَئِنif indeed دامَcontinues ذاthis مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity البُغضِof hatred لِلحُبِّfor love
So if anyone has died of love, I shall die—
Whoever died of love, I am also dead
if this continues—from intense hatred for love.
If this intense hatred for love were to last
