وافىhas arrived الحَبيبُthe beloved الزائِرُthe visiting one
طَلَعَhas risen الهِلالُthe crescent moon الباهِرُthe dazzling
The visiting beloved has arrived;
The beloved visitor has come
the dazzling crescent moon has risen.
The brilliant crescent moon has risen
وَغَزِيرُand the copious flow of دَمعيmy tears مُهتَدٍfinding its way
فيهِin him وَقَلبيand my heart حائِرُbewildered
And my copious tears find their way
And my overflowing tears of longing
in him, while my heart is bewildered.
Wander, and my heart is perplexed
ليI have عَبرَةٌa tear فيupon الخَدِّthe cheek ساfirst fragment of 'flowing'
ئِرَةٌcompletion of 'flowing' وَبَيتٌand a verse سائِرُwidely circulating
I have a tear upon my cheek,
I have flowing sorrows on my cheek
flowing, and a verse that travels.
And a house that is ever on the move
فَلَوِso if اِكتَحَلتَyou applied kohl to your eyes بِوَجهِهِwith his face
وَالطَرفُand the gaze مِنهُfrom him سائِرُwandering
So if you used his face as kohl,
If you would line your eyes with his face
while his gaze wandered,
While my glance moves over it
وَبِوَجنَتَيهِand upon his two cheeks بَدائِعٌmarvels
لِلجُلِّنارِto the pomegranate blossom ضَرائِرُrival co-wives
and on his cheeks were marvels—
And on his cheeks are wonders
co-wives vying with the pomegranate blossom—
For the gatherer of radiant beams
لَرَأَيتَyou would indeed see حَتفَdeath مَوارِدٍwatering places
لَيسَتthere are no لَهُنَّfor them مَصادِرُways of departure
you would see death at watering places
You would see a source of outpouring
from which there is no return.
That has no origin
