Weeping is my eye's habit, and sorrow is mine.

So leave me—may you be spared my plight—to my plight.

I shall apportion the days remaining in my life

among my anguish, my tears, and my despondency.

    ثُمَّ عَمَّت رَزيئَتي وَمُصابي

    In you, O Ahmad son of Harun, my loss was first mine alone;

then my bereavement and affliction spread to all.

The days bereaved me of you; so my solace

is in my disarray, and my safeguard in my turmoil.

The days bereaved me of one truthful in

    speech, a youth of noble deeds and refinement;

of an intimate beyond all other intimates—no, rather,

my companion, chosen above all my companions.

A man of resolve, who ranks with the two forebears of

Marwan among the noblest and those of pure stock.

Was it, then, when he clothed himself in glory and

    donned praise most splendidly,

and the eyes of those beholding him saw him

as a dazzling moon and a lion of the forest,

and on his cheeks flowed the water of generosity,

the water of wisdom and the water of youth,

that Death sent an eye toward him

that severed the firmest of his bonds?
