يَقولُsay أُناسٌsome people فيin حَبيناءَHabina عايَنواthey witnessed
عِمارَةَabundance رَحليmy baggage مِنof طَريفٍnewly acquired wealth وَتالِدِand inherited wealth
Some people in Habina say, having seen
People in Habina saw the adornment of my saddlebags
My baggage brimming with newly acquired and inherited wealth:
From fine craft and stitching, new and antique.
أَصادَفتَdid you chance upon كَنزاًa treasure أَمor صَبَحتَdid you attack at dawn بِغارَةٍwith a raid
ذَويthose with غِرَّةٍheedlessness حاميهُمُtheir protector غَيرُnot شاهِدِpresent
“Did you chance upon a treasure, or make a dawn raid on
"Did you find buried treasure or raid by night
Unsuspecting folk whose protector was absent?”
Hotheads whose rage boiled, no one to curb it?"
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them لاneither ذاthis وَلاnor ذاكَthat دَيدَنيmy customary way
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I أَقبَلتُcame مِنfrom عِندِthe presence of خالِدِKhalid
I told them, “Neither this nor that is my way;
I said, "It's neither this nor that, my way
Rather, I have come from Khalid.”
Rather I came from being with Khaled."
جَذَبتُI tugged نَداهُhis bounty غُدوَةَthe morning of السَبتِSaturday جَذبَةًa single tug
فَخَرَّso he fell صَريعاًstruck down بَينَbetween أَيديthe hands of القَصائِدِthe odes
I gave his bounty a single tug on Saturday morning,
I pulled his rope on Saturday dawn, pulled hard,
And he fell, struck down before the odes.
He fell dead amid odes I had composed.
فَأُبتُso I returned بِنُعمىwith a blessing مِنهُfrom him بَيضاءَwhite لَدنَةٍsupple
كَثيرَةِabundant in قَرحٍwounds فيin قُلوبِthe hearts of الحَواسِدِthe envious
So I returned with a blessing from him, white and supple,
So I was blessed by his bounty, pure and plentiful,
Inflicting many wounds on envious hearts.
Wounds in the hearts of the envious multitudes.
هِيَit الناهِدُthe full-breasted maiden الرَياthe plump one إِذاwhen نِعمَةُthe bounty of اِمرِئٍa man
سُواهُother than him غَدَتhas become مَمسوحَةًflat-chested غَيرَnot ناهِدِfull-breasted
It is the full-breasted, plump maiden, while the bounty of a man
It is the star of good fortune when a man's bounty
Other than him has grown flat-chested, not full-breasted.
Makes all others but it seem effaced, no longer radiant.
فَزَعتُI resorted to عِقابَthe mountain passes of الأَرضِthe earth وَالشِعرِand poetry مادِحاًpraising
لَهُfor him فَاِرتَقىso he ascended بيwith me فيthrough عِقابِthe mountain passes of المَحامِدِpraiseworthy deeds
I took to the mountain passes of earth and poetry, praising
I climbed the heights of earth and poetry praising
Him; then he bore me up through the passes of praiseworthy deeds.
Him, so climbed by his power the peaks of praise.
فَأَلبَسَنيso he clothed me مِنfrom أُمَّهاتِthe choicest of تِلادِهِhis inherited treasures
وَأَلبَستُهُand I clothed him مِنfrom أُمَّهاتِthe choicest of قَلائِديmy necklaces
So he clothed me in the choicest of his inherited treasures,
He clothed me in the mothers of his lineages noble,
And I clothed him in the choicest of my necklaces.
I clothed him in the mothers of my necklaces and jewels.
