اِستَزارَتهُinvited him to visit فِكرَتيmy thought فيin المَنامِthe dream
اِستَزارَتهُ فِكرَتي في المَنامِ
فَأَتانيso he came to me فيin خُفيَةٍsecrecy وَاِكتِتامِand concealment
فَأَتاني في خُفيَةٍ وَاِكتِتامِ
My thought invited him to visit me in a dream;
My thoughts begged him at night
so he came to me in secrecy and concealment.
So he came to me in the dark's disguise and concealment
اللَياليthe nights أَحفىkinder بِقَلبيto my heart إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic)
اللَيالي أَحفى بِقَلبي إِذا ما
جَرَحَتهُwounded it النَوىseparation مِنَthan الأَيّامِthe days
جَرَحَتهُ النَوى مِنَ الأَيّامِ
Nights are kinder to my heart, whenever
The nights wrap my heart when
separation wounds it, than the days are.
The days wound it with their sorrows
ياO لَهاfor it (exclamatory) لَذَّةًa delight تَنَزَّهَتِfreed themselves الأَرbeginning of 'the spirits'
يا لَها لَذَّةً تَنَزَّهَتِ الأَر
واحُcompletion of 'the spirits' فيهاwithin it سِرّاًsecretly مِنَfrom الأَجسامِthe bodies
واحُ فيها سِرّاً مِنَ الأَجسامِ
Oh, what a delight! The spirits freed themselves
Oh, the bliss in them as the souls
within it, secretly, from bodies.
Wander, a secret from the bodies
مَجلِسٌa gathering لَمnot (past negation) يَكُنbe لَناfor us فيهِin it عَيبٌa fault
مَجلِسٌ لَم يَكُن لَنا فيهِ عَيبٌ
غَيرَexcept أَنّاthat we فيat دَعوَةِinvitation الأَحلامِthe dreams
غَيرَ أَنّا في دَعوَةِ الأَحلامِ
A gathering in which we were without fault,
A gathering where we had no fault
except that we were there at dreams’ invitation.
Except being in the call of dreams
