نَمsleep وَإِنand even if لَمnot أَنَمI sleep كَرايَmy slumber كَراكاyour slumber

شاهِدٌa witness مِنكَfrom you أَنَّthat ذاكَthat كَذاكاthus
Sleep, even if I do not sleep; my slumber is yours.
Even if I do not sleep, pretend that I do
A sign from you attests that this is so.
For you are witness that this is my way
طالَhas lasted long ضُرّيmy suffering تَفديكَmay ransom you نَفسيmy soul وَقَلَّتand is too little
نَفسُthe soul مِثليone like me عَنfor أَنto تَكونَbe فِداكاyour ransom
My suffering has lasted long; may my soul ransom you—yet too little
My love for you has lasted long, and my soul pays the price
is the soul of one like me to be your ransom.
A soul like mine is seldom worth such sacrifice
فيin سَبيلِthe cause of الهَوىlove فُؤاديmy heart وَماand not آI grieve (first fragment)
سىI grieve (final fragment) عَلَيهِfor it لَكِنbut عَلىfor ذِكراكاthe memory of you
My heart is given for love's sake; I do not
For love's sake my heart is given, though I
grieve for it, but for the memory of you.
Feel no regret, only longing for the time we're nigh
ذَهَبَتhave been lost مُقلَتايَmy two eyes بِالدَمِwith blood وَالدَمand the tears (first fragment)
عِtears (final fragment) فَفيso in النارِthe fire إِذsince نَجَتwere spared مُقلَتاكاyour two eyes
My two eyes have been lost in blood and
My eyes are gone, spilled out in blood and tears
tears—let them burn, since your two eyes are safe.
Yet they are saved from hellfire by vision of you, my dear
لَستُI do not أَبكيweep ذَهابَthe loss of عَينيmy eye لِعَينيfor my eye's sake
غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I أَبكيweep لِأَنَّbecause لاnot أَراكاI see you
I do not weep for my eye's loss for my eye's own sake,
I do not mourn my lost eyes but rather I mourn
but I weep because I cannot see you.
That I'll not see your face when sight is gone
ماnot فِراقُparting from الدُنياthis world أُباليI care about وَلَكِنand yet
فيin فِراقِparting from الدُنياthis world فِراقُparting from هَواكاlove of you
I do not mind parting from this world, but
Leaving this world I do not dread, but parting
parting from this world means parting from loving you.
From you, as I leave this world, causes me such smarting
