وذي أذنين لا تعيان قولا

وذي أذنين لا تعيان قولا

وجوف للحوائج ذي احتمال

وجوف للحوائج ذي احتمال

And one with two ears that never comprehend a word,

And one with two ears that comprehend no speech,

And a belly capacious enough for every need;

and a hollow interior able to hold necessities.

تكلف شغل أهل البيت طرا

تكلف شغل أهل البيت طرا

وتحمل فيه أقوات العيال

وتحمل فيه أقوات العيال

You charge it with all the household’s work,

It has undertaken the work of the entire household,

And load within it the family’s provisions.

and the family's provisions are carried in it.

مطيع في الحوائج غير عاص

مطيع في الحوائج غير عاص

ولا شاك اليك من الكلال

ولا شاك اليك من الكلال

Obedient in every errand, never disobeying,

Obedient in errands, never disobedient,

Nor complaining to you of weariness.

and never complaining to you of weariness.

تسر اليه في الاسواق سرا

تسر اليه في الاسواق سرا

فلا يبديه الا في الرحال

فلا يبديه الا في الرحال

In the marketplaces you confide a secret to it,

You confide a secret to it in the markets,

And it reveals that secret only once home.

and it reveals it only in the dwellings.
