حبوبه كالجوهر المحلول

And a dish smiles in the bowl through its varied array:

Its grains are like jewels unstrung;

زيتونه كالسبج المصقول

جزره فواصل التنزيل

Its olives are like polished jet;

Its carrots are the verse-endings of Revelation;

حمصه كالدر في التشكيل

عدسه منتخب جليل

Its chickpeas are like pearls in their shape;

Its lentils are choice and splendid,

كمخرز محقق التعديل

أو ذهب بفضة قد غولي

Like beadwork, precisely proportioned,

Or gold dearly purchased with silver;

ولوبياء كخدود حيل

أو أعين حذر الحذاق حول

And cowpeas like the cheeks of barren females,

Or the squinting eyes of wary experts,

فيها بقايا رمد قليل

منقط يزينه التعسيل

In them remain traces of slight eye-inflammation;

Speckled, adorned by a coating of honey.
