كذاك الحي يغلب الف ميت

كذاك الحي يغلب الف ميت

We have rebutted a thousand verses by al-Ḥuṭayʾa.

Thus the living man defeats a thousand dead.

وذلك دعبلٌ يرجو سفاهاً

وذلك دعبلٌ يرجو سفاهاً

وحمقاً ان ينال مدى الكميت

وحمقاً ان ينال مدى الكميت

And that Duʿbil hopes, in folly

and stupidity, to attain al-Kumayt’s reach.

إذا ما الحي ناقض جذم قبر

إذا ما الحي ناقض جذم قبر

فذلكم ابن زانية بزيت

فذلكم ابن زانية بزيت

If a living man disputes with a stump in a grave,

then that fellow is the son of a woman who whores for oil.
