Make certain, O loud-voiced herald of death:
Is it true that Yazid has perished?
ألمdid you not تعجبmarvel لهat him أنthat المناياthe fates of death
ألم تعجب له أن المنايا
فتكنthey struck down بهhim وهنthough they لهfor him جنودsoldiers
فتكن به وهن له جنود
Did you not marvel at him—that the fates
struck him down, though they were his soldiers?
فتكنthey struck down بهhim وكنand they used to يحدنthey turn aside عنهfrom him
فتكن به وكن يحدن عنه
إذاwhenever ماemphatic particle الحربwar شبblazed لهاfor it وقودfuel
إذا ما الحرب شب لها وقود
They struck him down, though they used to turn away from him
whenever war’s fuel burst into flame.
لقدindeed عزىconsoled ربيعةRabi‘a انthat يوماa day
لقد عزى ربيعة ان يوما
عليهاupon her مثلlike يومكyour day لاnot يعومدunclear spelling; probably 'return'
عليها مثل يومك لا يعومد
It has indeed consoled Rabi‘a that a day
like yours will not return upon her (final verb uncertain).
