والموتُand death أمرٌa matter لهذاfor this الناسpeople مكتوبُdecreed
If you see us now that our gatherings have grown sparse,
You will either see us when our gatherings have diminished
and death is something decreed for these people,
And death is destined for these people
فقدfor indeed غنيناwe lived وفيناand among us سامرٌa companion by night غنجٌcoquettish
وساكنٌand a quiet person وكأنيand as though I الليلَat night مرهُوبُfeared
for we once lived, and among us was a coquettish companion by night,
For we have had our singing and drinking
and a quiet one; and at night, it is as though I am feared.
With one who sings softly and another who is silent as if the night terrifies him
مناamong us الذيthe one who هوhe ماnot إنeven (reinforcing negation) طرَّsprouted شاربهُhis moustache

Among us was one whose moustache had not even sprouted,
Among us is one who has barely wet his lips with wine
and unmarried men; and among us were the beardless youths and the grey-haired.
And the bachelors, and the grey-haired and white-haired among us
