You shaved your moustache, ignorant of what
You shaved off your moustache, unaware of what
it concealed of hideous abominations.
ugly horrors it concealed.
فَعَذَبْتَso you tormented صَحْبَكَyour companions حتىuntil المَساءevening
وعَذَبْتَand you tormented عرسكyour wife حتىuntil الصَّباحِmorning
And so you tormented your companions until evening,
So you tormented your companions until evening,
and tormented your wife until morning.
and tormented your wife until morning.
فلاso may … not أَبْعَدَbanish اللهُGod ذاكَthat السّبالِthe moustache
فَقَدْfor indeed كَانَit was ستْراًa covering عَلىover مستراحِa latrine
So may God never do away with that moustache—
So may God never banish that moustache,
for it had been a screen over a privy.
for it was a covering over a latrine.
