بِنَفْسيwith my life as ransom حَبيبٌa beloved بانَdeparted صَبْريmy patience لِبَيْنِهِbecause of his parting
بِنَفْسي حَبيبٌ بانَ صَبْري لِبَيْنِهِ
وأَوْدَعَنيand he left me with الأَحْزانَsorrows ساعَةَat the moment ودَّعاhe bade farewell
وأَوْدَعَني الأَحْزانَ ساعَةَ ودَّعا
My soul be ransom for a beloved—my patience departed at his departure;
I would give my life for a beloved; my patience fled at his parting.
he left sorrows in my keeping in the hour he bade farewell.
And he left me with sorrows the moment he bade farewell.
وأَنْحَلَنيand he made me emaciated بِالهَجْرِthrough abandonment حَتّىso much that لَوْif أَنَّنيthat I
وأَنْحَلَني بِالهَجْرِ حَتّى لَوْ أَنَّني
قَذىًa speck of grit بَيْنَbetween جَفْنَيْthe two eyelids of أَرْمَدٍa sore-eyed man ماnot تَوَجَّعاhe would feel pain
قَذىً بَيْنَ جَفْنَيْ أَرْمَدٍ ما تَوَجَّعا
By forsaking me he wasted me away, until, were I
And through abandonment he made me so thin that, were I
a mote between a sore-eyed man’s lids, he would feel no pain.
A speck between a sore-eyed man's eyelids, he would feel no pain.
