هِمِّتُهُ خَمْرٌ وماخورُ

هِمِّتُهُ خَمْرٌ وماخورُ

وهَمُّهُ عُودٌ وطَنْبورُ

وهَمُّهُ عُودٌ وطَنْبورُ

His ambition is wine and a brothel;

And his concern is an oud and a tanbur.

ولَيْسَ دُنْياهُ ولا دينُهُ

ولَيْسَ دُنْياهُ ولا دينُهُ

إِلا مَهاً مِثْلَ الدُّمى حُورُ

إِلا مَهاً مِثْلَ الدُّمى حُورُ

And neither his worldly life nor his faith

Is anything but dark-eyed oryxes, like sculpted figures.

ذَيْلُ الصِّبا في الغَيِّ مَجْرورُ

ذَيْلُ الصِّبا في الغَيِّ مَجْرورُ

والعُمْرُ بِاللَّذّاتِ مَعْمورُ

والعُمْرُ بِاللَّذّاتِ مَعْمورُ

The train of youth is dragged through waywardness;

And life is filled with pleasures.

ولَيْلَةُ الهَيْكَلِ كَمْ أَنْفَدْتُ

ولَيْلَةُ الهَيْكَلِ كَمْ أَنْفَدْتُ

فيها دِنانٌ ودَنانيرُ

فيها دِنانٌ ودَنانيرُ

And that night at the temple—how many I used up:

Wine jars and dinars there!

أَقْبَلْنَ كَالرَّوْضِ تَغْشاهُ مِنْ

أَقْبَلْنَ كَالرَّوْضِ تَغْشاهُ مِنْ

دُرٍّ وياقوتٍ أَزاهيرُ

دُرٍّ وياقوتٍ أَزاهيرُ

They came forward like a garden covered with

Blossoms of pearls and rubies,

على خُصورٍ أُرْهِفَتْ دِقَّةً

على خُصورٍ أُرْهِفَتْ دِقَّةً

فَفي الزَّنانيرِ زَنابيرُ

فَفي الزَّنانيرِ زَنابيرُ

On waists made delicately slender—

So within the girdles there were wasps.

فما دَرَيْنا أَوُجوهُ الدُّمى

فما دَرَيْنا أَوُجوهُ الدُّمى

أَحْسَنُ أَمْ تِلْكَ التَصاويرُ

أَحْسَنُ أَمْ تِلْكَ التَصاويرُ

So we could not tell: were the figures' faces

Lovelier, or were those pictures?

وعِنْدَنا صَفْراءُ مَنْ قَامَرَتْ

وعِنْدَنا صَفْراءُ مَنْ قَامَرَتْ

بِالسُّكْرِ مِنّا فهو مَقْمورُ

بِالسُّكْرِ مِنّا فهو مَقْمورُ

And we had a golden wine: whoever it gambled with

Among us in drunkenness was beaten at the game.

سُلافُ أَعْنابٍ فَعُنْقودُها

سُلافُ أَعْنابٍ فَعُنْقودُها

مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يُعْصَرَ مَعْصورُ

مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يُعْصَرَ مَعْصورُ

The choicest grape wine—its cluster

Was pressed before ever being pressed.

زادَ على المِصْباحِ إِشْراقُها

زادَ على المِصْباحِ إِشْراقُها

فَهو ظَلامٌ وهي النُّورُ

فَهو ظَلامٌ وهي النُّورُ

Its radiance outshone the lamp;

So the lamp was darkness, and the wine was light.

حَتَّى إِذا ما انْحَلَّ جَيْبُ الدُّجى

حَتَّى إِذا ما انْحَلَّ جَيْبُ الدُّجى

فينا وجَيْبُ الصُّبْحِ مَزْرورُ

فينا وجَيْبُ الصُّبْحِ مَزْرورُ

Until, when the bosom of darkness came unbuttoned

Among us, while dawn's bosom was buttoned shut,

جَرَتْ هَناتٌ لي أَجْمَلْتُها

جَرَتْ هَناتٌ لي أَجْمَلْتُها

فَهَلْ لَها عِنْدَكَ تَفْسيرُ

فَهَلْ لَها عِنْدَكَ تَفْسيرُ
