لاnot بِالأَمانيthrough wishes والتَّأْميلand hopeful expectation لِلْقَدَرِof fate
Goals are attained with keen-cutting Indian swords,
not through wishes and hopeful reliance on fate.
فَإِنْso if عَفاhas faded طَلَلٌa ruined dwelling أَوْor بَادَhas perished ساكِنُهُits inhabitant
فَلاthen do not تَقِفْstand فيهِin it بَيْنَamid البَثِّsorrow والفِكَرِand thoughts
So if a ruined dwelling has faded, or its inhabitant has perished,
do not stand there amid sorrow and brooding.
فيin شَمِّكَyour smelling المِسْكَmusk شُغُلٌan occupation عَنْaway from مَذاقَتِهِtasting it
وفيand in سَناthe radiance الشَّمْسِof the sun ماthat which يُغْنيdispenses عَنْwith القَمَرِthe moon
Smelling musk occupies you away from tasting it,
and the sun's radiance gives enough to dispense with the moon.
لوif لَمْnot أَكُنْI were مُشْبِهاًresembling لِلنّاسِother people فيin خُلُقيmy character
لَقُلْتُI would have said إِنّيthat I مِنْam of جيلٍa race سِوىother than البَّشَرِhumankind
Had I not resembled other people in my character,
I would have said I belonged to a race other than humankind.
أوor لَمْnot يَكُنْwere ماءُthe water عِلْميof my knowledge قاهِراًsubduing فِكْريmy thought
لأَحْرَقَتْنيwould have burned me فيin نيرانِهاtheir fires فِكَريmy thoughts
Or, had the water of my knowledge not subdued my thought,
my thoughts would have burned me in their fires.
تَزيدُنيincreases for me قَسْوَةُthe harshness الأَيّامِof the days طِيبَthe sweetness ثَناًof praise
كَأَنَّنيas though I were المِسْكُmusk بَيْنَbetween الفِهْرِthe stone pestle والحَجَرِand the stone
The harshness of the days makes my praise more fragrant,
as though I were musk between the pestle and the stone.
أَلفتُI grew accustomed مِنْto حادِثاتِthe calamities الدَّهْرِof time أَكْبَرهاtheir greatest
فَماso I do not أَعوجpause عَلىover أَطْفالهاtheir little offspring الأُخَرِthe others
I have grown accustomed to the greatest of time's calamities,
so I do not pause over their other little offspring.
لاشَيْءَnothing أَعْجَبُis stranger عِنْديto me فيin تَباينِهِits incongruity
إِذاwhen تَأَمَّلْتُهُI contemplate it مِنْthan هَذِهِthese الصُّوَرِfigures
Nothing seems stranger to me in its incongruity,
when I contemplate it, than these figures:
أَرىI see ثِياباًclothes وفيand within أَثْنائهاtheir folds بَقَرٌcattle
بِلاwithout قُرونٍhorns وذاand this عَيْبٌis a defect عَلىin البَقَرِcattle
I see clothes, and within their folds are cattle
without horns—and that is a defect in cattle.
قالَتْshe said رَقَدْتَyou slept فقلتso I said الهَمُّcare أَرْقَدَنيput me to sleep
والهَمُّand care يمنعprevents أَحياناًsometimes مِنَfrom السَّهَرِwakefulness
She said, 'You slept.' I answered, 'Care put me to sleep,'
for care sometimes prevents wakefulness.
كَمْhow often قدindeed وَقَعْتُI have fallen وُقوعَlike the falling الطَّيْرِof a bird فيinto شَرَكٍa snare
فَضَعْضَعَتْthen shattered مُنَّتيmy strength مِنْهُof it قوىthe strength المِرَرِof the twisted cords
How often I have fallen like a bird into a snare,
and my strength has broken the strength of its twisted cords.
أَصْفوI become clear وأَكْدَرُand I become turbid أَحْياناًsometimes لمختبريto whoever tests me
ولَيْسَand is not مُسْتَحْسَناًconsidered admirable صَفْوٌclarity بِلاwithout كَدَرِturbidity
Sometimes I am clear, sometimes turbid, to whoever tests me;
clarity without turbidity is not considered admirable.
إِنّيindeed I لأَسْيَرُrange farther فيacross الآَفاقِthe horizons مِنْthan مَثَلٍa proverb
سارٍin circulation وأَمْلأُand more filling لِلأَبْصارِto the eyes مِنْthan قَمَرِa moon
I range farther across the horizons than a proverb
in circulation, and fill the eyes more than a moon.
إِذاif تَشَكَّكْتَyou doubt فيماwhat أَنْتَyou مُبْصِرُهُare seeing
فَلاthen do not تَقُلْsay إِنَّنيindeed I فيamong النّاسpeople ذوpossess بَصَرِsight
If you doubt what you are seeing,
do not say, 'Among people, I possess sight.'
وكَيْفَand how يَفْرَحُcan rejoice إِنْسانٌa person بغرّتهin his radiant brow
إِذاif نَضاهاhe bares it فَلَمْand it does not تصْدِقْهُprove true to him فيin النَّظَرِlooking
And how can a person rejoice in his radiant brow
if, when he bares it, it proves false to his gaze?
لَقَدْindeed فَرِحْتُI have rejoiced بِماin what عَانَيْتُI endured مِنْof عُدُمٍpoverty
خوفfearing القَبيحَيْنِthe two ugly traits مِنْof كِبرarrogance ومِنْand of بَطَرِinsolence
Indeed, I have rejoiced in the poverty I endured,
fearing the two ugly traits: arrogance and insolence.
ورُبَّماand perhaps ابْتَهَجَrejoices الأَعْمىthe blind man بِحالَتِهِin his condition
لأَنَّهُbecause he قَدْhas نَجاescaped مِنْfrom طِيَرَةِthe ill omen العَوَرِof one-eyedness
A blind man may rejoice in his condition,
because he has escaped the ill omen of one-eyedness.
ولَسَتُand I do not أَبْكيweep لِشَيْبٍover gray hair قَدْwith which مُنيتُI have been afflicted بِهِwith it
يَبْكيweeps عَلىover الشَّيْبِgray hair مِنْwhoever يَأْسىgrieves عَلىover العُمُرِthe lifetime
And I do not weep over the gray hair with which I have been afflicted;
those who grieve over their lifetime weep over gray hair.
كُنْbe مِنْof صَديقِكَyour friend لاnot مِنْof غَيْرِهِanyone other than him حَذِراًwary
إِنْif كانَcan يُنْجيكَsave you مِنْهُfrom him شِدَّةَthe intensity الحَذَرِof caution
Be wary of your friend, rather than anyone else,
if the utmost caution can save you from him.
ماnever أَطْمَئِنُّdo I trust إِلىin خَلْقٍa person فَأُخْبِرُهُand confide in him
إِلاَّwithout تَكَشَّفَrevealing himself ليto me عَنْas possessing لُؤْمbaseness مُخْتَبَرِexposed by testing
Whenever I trust a person and confide in him,
he reveals to me a baseness exposed by experience.
وقَدْand indeed نَظَرْتُI have looked إِلىat الدُّنْياthe world بِمُقْلَتهاthrough its own eye
فَاسْتَصْغَرَتْهاthen judged it small جُفونيmy eyelids غايَةَto the utmost الصِّغَرِsmallness
I have looked at the world through its own eye,
and my eyelids have judged it utterly small.
وماand I did not شَكَرْتُthank زَمانيmy age وهوwhile it يَصْعَدُwas rising بيwith me
فَكَيْفَso how أَشْكُرُهُcan I thank it فيin حالِthe state مُنْحَدَريof my descent
I did not thank my age when it was raising me up;
so how can I thank it as I descend?
لاno عارٌdisgrace يلحقنيattaches to me أَنّيbecause I بِلاam without نَشَبٍwealth
وأَيُّand what عارdisgrace علىattaches to عَيْنٍan eye بِلاwithout حَوَرِlovely white-dark contrast
No disgrace attaches to me because I possess no wealth;
and what disgrace is there in an eye without lovely contrast?
فَإِنْso if بَلَغْتُI attain الذيwhat أَهْوىI desire فَعَنْthen through قَدَرٍdestiny
وإِنْand if حُرِمْتُI am denied الذيwhat أَهْوىI desire فَعَنْthen through عُذُرِexcusing reasons
So if I attain what I desire, it is through destiny;
and if I am denied what I desire, there are excusing reasons.
