وشادِنٍand a young gazelle قُلْتُI said لَهُto him ماwhat اسْمُهُhis name
وشادِنٍ قُلْتُ لَهُ ما اسْمُهُ
فَقالَso he said ليto me بالغُنْجِwith coquettish charm عَبّاثُʿAbbāth (ʿAbbās pronounced with a lisp)
فَقالَ لي بالغُنْجِ عَبّاثُ
I asked a gazelle-like youth what his name was;
And a young gazelle—I asked him his name.
Coyly he answered me, “ʿAbbāth.”
So he told me coyly, “ʿAbbāth.”
فَصِرْتُso I became منfrom لَثْغَتِهِhis lisp أَلْثَغاًlisping
فَصِرْتُ من لَثْغَتِهِ أَلْثَغاً
فَقُلْتُso I said أَيْنَwhere الكاثُthe cup or glass (lisped) والطّاثُand the bowl or basin (lisped)
فَقُلْتُ أَيْنَ الكاثُ والطّاثُ
His lisp made a lisper of me,
So his lisp made me lisp as well,
So I asked, “Where are the glath and the bathin?”
And I said, “Where are the glath and the bathin?”
